Okay, so this may seem really basic, but a notebook and pen or pencil are a really good thing to have in hospital. Primarily, this is for remembering things. There is so much to remember that making notes can be invaluable and (at least in my opinion) physically writing rather than typing a note on a smartphone is the best way to do this. It also makes your notes easy to tear out and share with someone else.
Use your notepad and pen for:
- Notes of meetings with doctors and other staff
- Lists of what you’d like your visitors to bring
- Puzzling
- Making a visitor’s timetable
- Passive agressive notes to your ward friends asking them to be quiet
Of course you don’t need to buy a special notebook and pen. Whatever you already have that works for you will serve the purpose. However if you have a hand or arm injury you may need to think about a pen that’s easy to grip and a larger pad of paper may be easier to write on if it moves around less.
